Agriculture traditionally has played a key role in the economy of the Cavan-Monaghan region. The rolling Drumlin landscape presents many challenges in terms of farming activity and indeed has shaped the primary land based enterprises and fostered an entrepreneurial spirit that has fuelled farm diversification.

LEADER has played an important role in supporting farm diversification and in acting as a catalyst for development of niche products and services. As primary agriculture production comes under increasing pressure, broad based rural development programmes such as LEADER will rise to this challenge and assist in developing alternative income streams for farm families.
