Breda Treanor – Organic Vegetables & Herbs

breda_treanor.jpgCavan-Monaghan Rural Development provided capital grant assistance under the Agriculture Measure of the NRDP for Purchase of two Polythene Tunnels, Irrigation system and Heaters for expansion of small fresh vegetable and herb business.

The promoter currently supplies vegetables and herbs to a number of local restaurants, greengrocers, B&B’s and butchers in the Emyvale area and also some major outlets in Monaghan town. Demand for produce has exceeded supply originally available from one polythene tunnel.

Home produced vegetables are not widely available in the north east and are currently imported from other parts of Ireland and abroad.

The project promoter established the existing small business in October 2001 on approx. 5 acres of land leased from her brother for a 20 year period. A second hand tunnel was purchased without grant aid to start the current business.

Ms. Treanor established this business under the Back to Work Enterprise Allowance Scheme administered by County Monaghan Partnership through the DSCFA with grant support from LEADER The promoter has completed a certificate course in organic horticulture run by the Organic Centre, Rossinver and also a number of other certificate qualifications on courses run by Teagasc and various other organisations. The promoter has a keen interest in horticulture with plenty of practical experience, and it committed to developing the current business further. In addition the promoter is a regular stall holder at the recently established Monaghan Country Market
