Electronic Poultry Weighing Pilot Project

chicken_weighing.jpgCapital grant assistance was made available for the installation of an innovative electronic weighing system for chickens in counties Cavan and Monaghan. The project involves the installation of electronic scales in 45 poultry producers broiler houses. The system is connected to a computer and modem which will enable the data and information collected to be transferred over the phone lines to a central computer located in the processors premises. The system will enable the performance and growth of the poultry to be monitored on a daily basis. Slaughter dates can be set at optimum times for uniformity of product, hence increasing market value and margins

The market increasingly demands accurate weights. Electronic weighing of live birds allows this demand to be met more accurately. It will also provide historical data on the progress of the flock i.e. growth rates per day and uniformity. This strengthens the chain of traceability thus giving real assurances to the customer. €90,000 has been made available under the Agriculture Measure of the NRDP for financing this pilot initiative.
