Waste segregation - Wilton Waste and Recycling

rodney_wilton.jpg
Capital grant assistance has been provided under the National Rural Development Programme to Wilton Waste and Recycling for purchase of equipment to develop a waste segregation and disposal business. The business idea had been well though out by the promoter Mr. Rodney Wilton and is an innovative means of diversifying from his traditional farming income.

Diversion of waste from landfill is a priority in all areas and this project tackles that issue. The business was established nine months ago and since then takes in 10 skips a day of waste material. Five per day from operators that do not have a transfer station and approx. 5 from his own skip lorries.

Intially the promoter received skips into his converted farmyard and sorted by hand as much waste as possible for recycling i.e. wood, metal, plastic and paper. When these materials were removed there were still large quantities of recyclable materials left but which could not be removed by hand an ended up in landfill.

The project received support for the purchase of a trommel and picking line for segregating the skip waste. The trommel allows sand and earthen materials to be mechanically removed and the picking line will allows a safe environment for workers to hand pick other recyclable waste. The promoter has secured markets for the recyclables. Steel, Cardboard, papers and Timber. The promoter has undertaken a somewhat unique project being undertaken by a farmer in this area and has proven the ability to make this service work and become economically viable.
