Preparing cattle for the agricultural show
I hope you enjoy this training module and please let me know what you think of our efforts by completing our feedback form at the end. Happy Grooming! Kathleen Duffy - Virginia Agricultural Show

1. Once animal is over 3 months, take animal into cattle crush, halter the animal
2. Attach a long rope to the halter.
3. Tie the animal to the crush and leave him/her to get used to being tied.
4. Remember to spend time getting the confidence of the animal by rubbing and brushing. Communications is very important to create a bond between show person and beast.
5. Loosen rope and allow the animal to walk up and down the crush.
6. Repeat every day for 4 days until the animal gets used to walking with the loosened rope.
7. Walk animal round a small area 6 x 12 or 6 x 10 ft continuing to rub and brush.
8. Get someone to come behind and start to move animal on.
9. Train her to stop and stand by pulling on the rope.
10. Chuck on the rope when you want to move her.
11. Walk her more slowly every time.
12. Never stand at the head of the animal.
13. Remember to stand at shoulder level at all times so you can guide the animal.
14. When stopped get the animal to show a better stance by gently standing four legs square with a show stick.
15. The head of an animal is like a steering wheel of a car it guides the direction the animal will walk.
16. Wash and shampoo the animal so it will get used to the feel of water.
17. Clip the animal to show it off to its best potential.
18. Brush the hair of a beef animal up and brush the hair of a dairy animal down.
19. Fluff up the tail with a brush.

These tips have been given by Virginia Show Society committee member Leo McEnroe well known Aberdeen Angus Breeder and many times show winner. Contact Leo at L & R Grooming Mobile no. 086 6384072.
