Website Improvements

1. Update Source Code - Meta Data

Once you have installed the Leech FTP Client onto your PC, you will need to enter the login information supplied by your Internet Service Provider in order to access the files associated with your web site.

Launch the application and you will be presented with the following screen:

Choose ‘File’ and ‘Bookmarks’.
Then select ‘Edit’ and ‘Add Folder’. Name the folder ‘my site’.
Select ‘Edit’ and ‘Add Bookmark’.

You will be shown the following screen:

You will need to enter the following details; ‘Hostname’, ‘Username’ and ‘Password’.
Leave ‘Remote Directory’ bland and leave ‘Anonymous Login’ selected, then click ‘okay’.
Now double click on the icon created in the ‘my site’ folder.

A connection will be established with the host server where your web files are held. In order to get a local version of the files you simply drag the html files from the right hand window (server side) to the left hand window (Your PC). Remember when uploading and downloading files: text or html files should be transferred in ASCII and image files should be transferred in BINARY. Simply click the icon on the toolbar when changing transferring file types.

Editing the Source Code

Now we have downloaded our web files to the local hard drive of the PC we can edit them.

1 Select the HTML file you wish to edit, open it and from the web browser toolbar select ‘View’ and ‘Source’.

2 You will be presented with a notepad window consisting of what looks like a very complex page of text and characters. Don’t be put off by this! When we break it down into its simplest format you will be surprised how straight forward it becomes. For the purposes of this course we are going to concentrate on editing the ‘title’, ‘meta tags’ and ‘keywords’ of this site.

Simply enter the relevant title, description and keywords you would wish people to refer to your site into the areas provided. i.e. between and instead of ‘World Wide Web Consortium’ enter ‘Cavan Monaghan Rural Development Ballyhaise Cavan Ireland home page’.

When you’re done, simply save the file and upload it in the same way you dragged the file down from the server back up again. We will not be able to see visible changes in meta tags and keywords (the search engines will however) , but we will be able to see the visible change of the ‘Title’ tag. It will appear on the top left corner of the web browser window as shown below:
