Website Improvements
3. Make your web page download quicker

Often many novice web page designers make the mistake of not resizing images using proper image software. Instead often editors are used to click and drag to the required size. By doing this the physical file size of the image is not reduced and therefore remains far too large for viewing online.

For the purposes of this course we will use the free image software ‘Irfanview’ to edit our image.
  • Launch the ‘Irfanview’ application
  • Open the image you wish to reduce the file size in Irfanview
  • Using your mouse, left click and drag around the area of the central point of attention within the image.
  • Click ‘Edit’ and ‘Crop Selection’.
You now have your image narrowed down to the point of attention with the other background which is not needed taken out.

We still need to reduce the physical file size of the image.
  • Click ‘Image’ and ‘Resample/Resize’
  • resizing.jpg
  • Set the new width or height you require noting that the ‘preserve aspect ratio’ is ticked to prevent the image from going out of proportion.
  • In the ‘DPI’ box, generally web images are assigned a DPI (or dots per inch) of 72.
  • Click ‘OK’.
  • Now save the image and reload it into your web page.

The file size will then be greatly reduced and will consequently download much quicker on conventional dial-up internet connections.
