Biological audit for Co. Monaghan

Objective

To create a simple database for the county, listing sources and locations of relevant biological data, identifying gaps in biological knowledge and making recommendations for future work.

Context

The compilation and assessment of existing published and unpublished information on Natural Heritage data will provide baseline information for Co. Monaghan, and will be an initial step towards the objective of writing a Local Biodiversity Action Plan for the county (action 5.13 County Monaghan Heritage Plan). To this end, a key objective in this study will be the identification of gaps in the biological knowledge for Monaghan.

Aims of the project
  • Creation of a bibliography of all published information including books, reports and papers containing information pertaining to the ecology of Co. Monaghan
  • Identification and inclusion of unpublished information including that contained in Environmental Impact Statements, under- and post-graduate theses, reports and datasets held by Governmental organisations, non-governmental organisations, educational institutes, environmental consultancies and individual recorders
  • Consultation with all holders of national datasets will be particularly important, to ensure that all relevant information for each county is included
  • Analysis of the dataset; identification of strengths and gaps in area, habitat and species knowledge, and recommendations for priorities in future work will also be required

This is a joint project of Monaghan County Council and Cavan Monaghan Rural Development and is an action of the County Monaghan Heritage Plan 2006 – 2010.
