Cavan Monaghan Rural Development Co-operative Society Ltd (CMRD) in conjunction with Rural Tourism International Training Network has developed and delivered a series of training modules entitled: ‘An Introduction to Rural Tourism and Tourism Marketing’.

This training was delivered in Blacklion, Co Cavan, Clontibret, Co Monaghan and most recently in Clones, Co Monaghan by two local Rural Tourism Entrepreneurs. This is the first time that training of this nature has been delivered in Cavan/Monaghan and is unique in Ireland. The training combines the factual information involved in the delivery and marketing of a small tourism enterprise, with the practical knowledge delivered by an experienced Rural Tourism provider.

CMRD are planning to expand this programme further in the coming months. We would be delighted to hear from any group or community in the border counties of Armagh, Cavan, Fermanagh, Monaghan or Tyrone who would be interested in having this innovative programme delivered in their area. Two further training programmes have been planned to commence in Pettigo, Co Donegal & Virginia, Co Cavan in the coming week. If interested, please e-mail us.

The success of this initiative is due to the skills and knowledge of the trainers, who brought their own personal experience of tourism to life through their training. The training to date has been delivered by Anke Morgenroth of Bear Essentials, Co Cavan and Breda Gillick of Lake Shore Log Chalets, Kilinkere, Co Cavan. The trainers have completed a FETAC accredited ‘Train the Trainers’ programme organised by CMRD.

This training is helping rural border inhabitant’s focus on their own assets and knowledge, which can be utilised for the benefit of their families and communities through the development of a rural tourism enterprise.
