The Method
The Method
1. Attach the cord to the first pole called Pole A using a clove hitch knot. This is the first part of a shoe lace knot as shown in the two photos below.

2. Place the second pole – Pole B, across the first pole at a right angle just left of the lashing cord.
Ensure that you place the second pole, close to the cord as shown.

3. Pass the cord over Pole B as shown. Ensure that the cord is pulled neat.

4. Pass the cord under Pole A.
Again ensure that the cord is pulled tight.

5.Pull the cord up and over Pole B as shown on the right.

6. Pass the cord under Pole A, completing a loop as shown. Ensure that the cord is pulled as neatly and firmly as possible.

7.Complete steps 3-6 a further 5 times. The cord should be holding the two poles secure together.
View video on securing the cord around the two poles ( Please note you may need a broadband connection )

8. To secure the knot, you now need to pass the cord in a circular motion between Pole A and Pole B as shown.
9.Complete this loop a further 4 times, ensuring that the cord is pulled tight at all times. The two pieces of wood should now be held securely together.

10. To finish off the lashing, wrap the cord around Pole A again and tuck the end of the cord under the first knot.
Cut any excess cord.
11. This lashing technique can be used to make many gadgets.
This chair pictured to the right, was created using square lashings to hold the pieces of timber together.
